FAQs

What is LASIK?

LASIK, which stands for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is laser eye surgery that can reduce or eliminate your need for glasses or contact lenses. During LASIK surgery, your surgeon uses an excimer laser to remove small amounts of corneal tissue and carefully reshape your cornea. You can have one or both eyes treated during LASIK surgery.

Will LASIK surgery give me perfect vision?

LASIK surgery can dramatically improve your vision, but it won’t guarantee perfect vision. Most patients can quit wearing glasses or contact lenses for vision correction after LASIK surgery. However, you may still need reading glasses as you age.

Am I a candidate for LASIK surgery?

There are three problems that LASIK surgery can help correct: astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. However, not everyone who has one of these conditions is a good LASIK candidate. LASIK surgery is best for patients who meet the following qualifications:

  • Age 18 or over

  • No eye disease, like glaucoma

  • Consistent vision prescription for at least a year

Your overall health is a consideration, too. You can't have infections anywhere in your body when you have LASIK surgery. If you suffer from an autoimmune disease, such as multiple sclerosis, you may also not be a good candidate.

Furthermore, if you have uncontrolled diabetes, you're not a LASIK candidate. However, if you suffer from diabetes, but you've never had diabetic eye disease and your condition is well-controlled, you may still be a LASIK candidate.

And lastly, pregnant women and nursing moms can't have LASIK surgery.

What does LASIK surgery feel like?

You won't feel anything during your LASIK surgery, because your surgeon will use anesthetic eye drops to numb your eye. It's possible that you'll experience a mild feeling of pressure during your LASIK surgery, but you won’t feel pain.

What is recovery from LASIK surgery like?

Your doctor will prescribe eye drops to help you heal after surgery. Most patients take a day or two off, and they usually enjoy clear vision within 24-48 hours.

Your vision may continue to improve over the new few months. You should generally avoid activities that can potentially damage your eyes, such as contact sports, for at least a few weeks.
